26 January, 35th year of the reign of Charles II (since his regnal years count from the date of execution of his father, Charles I, on 30 January 1648/9, this puts the date this Will was written to 1683/4).
Francis Massingham, of Little Langham, ploughwright; "being aged".
" To Edmond (sic) Massingham, my son, all that of my messuage --- and all the land thereto belonging which I purchased of Robert Narborough, blacksmith, and to which I was admitted at Court holden for the manor of Langham cum Morston on 9 April 1656* by virtue of a surrender by the said Robert Narborough before that to the use of me the said Francis and Hester my wife ... and the heirs of me, to enter upon the same from and immediately after the death of the said Hester my wife and thereforth to hold the same to the said Edmond my son and his heirs for ever.
* This date is within a gap in the Langham manorial records at the NRO.
I interpret this transfer from Robert Narborough to indicate he was Hester's father, but this remains to be proved unequivocally.
" To William Massingham my son and Modesty his now wife, the messuage in which I now dwell and all other messuages and lands from and immediately following my death.
Hester therefore presumably had to move out of the house in which she'd lived with Francis, and occupy the property that would pass to Edmond after her death. This is confirmed by the apparent address for the delivery of the following bequest:
" (William) shall and do well and ---- pay or cause to be paid to the said Hester my wife at or in the said messuages theretofore Narboroughs the sum of 50 shillings within half a year next after my burial if she the said Hester shall be then alive (and 50 shillings every half year). (If William defaults, Hester can enter his property, etc.)
" To Hester my wife, all goods, chattles, money ..., household stuffs.
" Sole executrix: Hester my wife.

Frederick James Massingham is mentioned in association with Elsie Maud Massingham in two documents (1933-34 and 1947) - see below. Another document, dated 18 September 1901-14 December 1902, referred to Frederick's "record of conduct and service" (presumably in the forces) and his transfer to the reserve (computer search conducted in 1995 by South African Department of Arts, Culture, Science & Technology for records mentioning the Massingham surname) .
The Pietermaritzburg archives in South Africa include documents referring to the estates of the then deceased Frederick James Massingham [MSCE 19233/1933 - the latter number presumably referring to the year of his death] and his wife Elsie Maud Massingham [MSCE 1074/1947] (email on 23 December 1998 from Grant Nurden, Actagen Genealogical Research Services, Pietermaritzburg, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa) .
