A bastardy order (microfilm MF/X/280/7 at Norfolk Record Office) was made by the parish of Watton, Norfolk on 14 August 1769 against John Francis for the male child of Elizaeth Stebbing (actually recorded as Elizabeth Stebbings):
Know all men by these presents that John Francis, late of Swaffham in the county of Norfolk, husbandman, and now of Great Cressingham in the said county, am held and firmly bound to Thomas Younge and Francis Machin, churchwardens, and Henry Fletcher, overseer of the poor of the parish of Watton in the said county in trust for the parishioners of the said parish in the sum of £50 of good and lawful money of Gt. Britain to be paid to the said Thomas Younge, Francis Mhacin and Henry Fletcher or their certain attorney, their executors, administrators or assigns to which payment well and truly to be made and bind myself, my heirs, executors and administrators firmly by these presents sealed with my seal and dated the 14th August 1769.
Whereas Elizabeth Stebbings (sic) of Watton aforesaid singlewoman hath in her examination taken in writing upon oath before Randyle (?) Peck (?) and John Marcon Esq. two of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace and for the said county declared that on Wednesday 21st June last at the house of Mary Stebbings in the said parish of Watton, she the said Elizabeth Stebbings was delivered of a male bastard child and that the said bastard child was likely to be chargeable to the said parish of Watton and that the above bound John Francis did get her with child of the said bastard child (etc.).
