1 December in the fortieth year of the reign of our Lady Elizabeth ... Queen of England ... (which makes it 1598?)
I, Thomas Massingham of Langham, Norfolk, ploughwright ...
(commends his soul to God)
(body to be buried in the churchyard of Langham)
I give and bequeath to William Massingham (Massinghame) my son and to his heirs, my tenemnt called Bette (?) Barnewith the curtelage thereto blonging and as of late purchased from Robert Borrie of Langham. My will and intent is that the said William my son shall enter enjoy and possess the said tenement and appurtenances when he comes to the age of 24 (xxiijjtie) years and not before.
I give and bequeath to John Massingham my son and his heirs my tenement wherein I now dwell with the yard thereto adjoining and all the residence (?) of land as well --esi-de- as lease (?) land set lying and being in the town and filde (fields?) of Langham. I give and bequeath to the said John Massingham one table with a frame thereto belonging. My will and intent is that the said John my son shall enter enjoy and possess the said tenement and lands and other premises before to him given after my wife's decease and not before.
I will and my mind is that if it happen that John my son departs this life before he comes to enter the premises then I will the said tenement and land bfore given to John my son remain to William my son and his heirs.
I give unto Elizabeth Massingham my daughter five marks of lawful English money to be paid to her or her assigns by John my son or William my son if it shall happen my son John do depart this transitory life in manner and form above specified within one year next after the entering the premises and if the said John my son be then living as aforesaid, or William my son if he survive, refuse to pay the said five marks as is aforesaid that then I give the said tenement and land to Elizabeth my daughter and her heirs, she to enter the same at such time as John or William should have done if either of them had paid the money at the time herein specified.
I give and bequeath to Robert my son forty shillings of lawful English money to be paid to him at his age of four and twenty years.
I give and bequeath to Joan (original Johan) Massingham my daughter thirty shillings of lawful English money to be paid within one quarter of a year next after my decease. I give and bequeath to the said Joan my daughter one posteed (polstered?) bedstead one featherbed (?) one bolster one pair of sheets one covering and one brasse (?) potte (?) as they stand in the kitcheon (?)
I give to Margaret Loods (Loads) my daughter one cupboard and one candlestick.
I give and bequeath to Katherine Loods (Loads) my daughter one bedstead standing in the chamber.
I give to William Loods (Loads) the son of Robert Loods one silver spoon.
I give and bequeath to Alice (original Alicie?) Loods (Loads) the daughter of Robert Loods one pewter platter and one pewter dish.
I give to Sarah (original Saraie?) Loods (Loads) the daughter of Robert Loods one great copper kettle
I will and my meaning is that they shall be delivered to them and ----- of them by my supervisor presently (?) after my wife's decease.
I constitute and make Lettic/Lettis my wife my sole executrix unto whom I give and bequeath all the residue of my movables goods and chattles not before given and bequeathed and all the ---- possession and occupation of all my aforesaid tenement and lands before given to John my son during her natural life upon sure condition and consideration that she the said Lettis/Lettic my wife shall pay and perform all such gifts bequests and payments as I have given and named and bequeathed in this my last Will and Testament and also pay or cause to be paid all such fines as shall be done (due?) or growing (?) of all my foresaid tenement and lands given to John by reason and therein this my last Will and Testament for the discharge of John my son to the lands of the manor of whom the sh---ss- bond holden as also to pay or cause to be paid all manner of rents, farms (?) sints (?) and services as shall be done (due?) from time to time of the said tenements and lands keeping the said house in sufficient reparation during her natural life.
I will and mind is that the said Lettis my wife shall be bound in twenty pounds in her widowhood and within the space of four (?) months next after my decease and before she make or do (?) to be made any rebate of this my last Will and Testament unto my overseer and supervisor of this my last Will and Testament whom I make ordain and appoint Robert Borrie of Langham.
I will and my mind is the bond aforesaid be made with condition that the said Lettis shall prove this my last Will and Testament and pay and perform all such gifts, legacies, payments, debts, bequests and other things as is contained and menioned in this my last Will and Testament or in any part thereof according to my ---- meaning and intent.
And if the said Lettis shall and will not be bound as is aforesaid then I will that Robert Borrie shall be my executor and prove my last Will and Testament he to have, enjoy and possess those those things as is afore resited (recited?) and as Lettis my wife should have had if she had agreed (?) laying to the said Lettis bond of twenty pounds to ---- this my last Will and Testament and to pay and perform all such things as is mentioned before and as the said Lettis should have done if she had agreed (?) this my last Will and Testament and thereto had been (original bine) bound.
