A Royal Gift - A beautiful black ebony box, containing a powerful binocular marine glass, from the German Emperor, was on Tuesday handed by the directors of the Great Eastern Railway Company to Mr. Massingham, their harbour master at Lowestoft, as a token of His Majesty's appreciation of the successful efforts made by Mr. Massingham on the night of the 29th of September last in rescuing the passengers and crew of the German steamship Castor, which had come into collision with another vessel and grounded near the Nore sands. Mr. Massingham, in expressing his acknowledgement to the German Emperor for the present, and to the directors as the medium of conveying it to him, mentioned that this was the second testimonial he had received for saving life. The first one, which consisted of a gold chronometer and chain he was then wearing, had been presented to him by the inhabitants of Lowestoft for rescuing the crew of a Norwegian vessel in November, 1874.

James & Hannah migrated to Yorkshire between 1861 and 1881 (Census data).
·Daughter Ann was married in Rosedale, Yorkshire on 7 September 1860. This is the first recorded appearance of this Massingham line in Yorkshire. Ann's husband was also from Norfolk (Old Buckenham).
·Son George was first recorded as living in Yorkshire, also in Rosedale, in 1861 (Census). James (without Hannah) is in Yorkshire by the 1871 Census, but only staying with son George - perhaps not yet permanently resident in the county? - Hannah's whereabouts remain untraced so far.
·Daughter Elizabeth is first recorded in Yorkshire in the 1871 Census.
These movements imply that Ann's and Elias' move north by 1860 (presumably so Elias could find work) was the initial stimulus for the wider migration of the Watton Massinghams, George was the next to go (by 1861), Elizabeth next (by 1871) and it took a long time before James moved his own home (i.e. not until somewhere between 1871 and 1881). In 1861, James was still in Watton. In the interim (1871), James moved up to lodge with George.

The population of what was to become the world-famous "Cleveland district of North Riding of Yorkshire" had only a small indigenous population and so the bulk was made up of inward migrants.
Many of the migrants came from the established coal mining areas of Durham and Northumberland, but many came from the Cornish tin mines. Men were often recruited by agents, and these often arrived by train or ship along with their families, to await accommodation provided by the mine owners. Accommodation was at a premium and often existing tenants of the mine owners were "obliged" to take in the new workers as lodgers.
The resulting over-crowding caused epidemics of the common diseases of the time - scarlet fever and more deadly enteric complaints.
Those who were not recruited by agents often made the journey alone on foot from such distant places as Norfolk and Suffolk. On arrival in Cleveland, they had to find jobs and lodgings. They often stayed 8 or more to a room, beds never cold as men slept in relays.
Villages like Boosbeck and Brotton grew into wild frontier-like small towns. Drunkenness and petty crime thrived in such circumstances and was in turn the bread and butter of local newspapers.

rdrtrdrsrdrw20rsp100 rdrlrdrsrdrw20rsp100 rdrbrdrsrdrw20rsp100 rdrrrdrsrdrw20rsp100 Searching the 1881 Census ... Fenton Street, Skelton, Guisbrough, on the northern edge of the North York Moors, was a street of some 35 houses. In 15 of these lived people whose origins were in Norfolk.
I know how difficult it is to understand a broad Norfolk accent, so I was not surprised not to be able to find E. Bayson, Bassam, Budham and Guistwick. But, since the other Norfolk places of birth (with the exception of Stow and Norwich) were all located near the old railway line that ran from Wymondham to Wells), I can only guess that the first 2 (particularly since they occur in the same family) were E. Barsham, and the others Rudham and Guist.
